Our founder, 81 year old Sister Nora Brick was assaulted at her trailer on February 14th. She suffered a concussion, a broken nose, two black eyes and numerous cuts and contusions. She spent three nights in the hospital, and has been recuperating under the care of two nuns from her order, who were coincidentally visiting Sister Nora at the time of the attack.

Her attacker, Eliseo Ortiz, is still on the run. He is 51 years old, 5' 10" and ~185 pounds, a homeless Mexican, and a frequent recipient of Sister Nora's generosity and kindness.

Sister Nora has recovered rapidly, is current feeling well, and has traveled back to a convent in New Jersey for further rest and recuperation. It is currently anticipated that she will return to Bradenton in May or June for a final fairwell celebration. Those wishing to contact Sister Nora may do so by writing her at:

Project Light of Manatee, Inc. is a literacy center located at 1104 14th Street in Bradenton, Florida.

Our Mission is to serve the people in Manatee County who need help learning to read, write and speak English.

We also try to help those who are studying to take the citizenship test, or have any other type of educational need.

In the summer we hold sessions for the children who may need a little extra help with their school work, especially those who have non-English speaking parents.

We try to help all who come to us.

Project Light believes every person should be offered the tools needed to escape poverty and to have a fuller life. Many people in the community cannot speak English, and are often taken advantage of because of this. The mostly migrant population needs English and other skills to be able to help themselves. Whenever people are enabled to better themselves, the community benefits, too.
