What we
do...
Project Light has classes for people who want to learn
English.
Within our ESOL classes
we offer help in basic math and skills that will help
students with GED. Some students have even asked for
help in preparing for the citizenship test. Whenever
possible the student receives individual
instruction. However, occasionally a tutor may have
more than one student at a time. To enrich our
curriculum, we use The Oxford Picture Dictionary and other
adult ESOL books.
During the day we have
small classes or one-on-one tutoring. The students come in
to study on their schedule, not Project Light's. This makes
for a very flexible system that adapts to the time and
energy of the student. Some students come in for several
hours a day when they are not working; others come in for
an hour or so before, or after, work. Some even come
in when they are living locally, move on for a while and
then return to resume their studies when they come back
into town. Usually in these cases, a brief review gets them
back where they were when they stopped. A folder is
kept on each student's progress so that any tutor can pick
up where the last one left off. This works very well
for the needs of the students. The one-on-one tutoring is
very beneficial for the student, and the flexibility of the
program enables students to learn at their own speed.
Our flexibility and evening classes make
us unique.
Beside the daily
sessions, there are evening classes three nights per week
and a children's summer program. The latest program is
planned for and after school tutoring session for children
at risk for failing in school. This program has been
partially funded, and we are awaiting the balance before
starting.
The summer children's session lasts from
late June until the end of July. It was augmented in 2004
and 2005 by an Arts Program on Wednesdays provided by the
Manatee Arts Council and Healthy Start. In August we close
to give our teachers and tutors a well deserved rest.
